The Fix the Fells project are looking for volunteers to help maintain the rights of way in the Lake District. These volunteers known as 'lengthsmen' in Cumbria are needed to help fix the paths that are used by over 10 million people every year.
Volunteers will be clearing path gullies and culverts, improving drainage, sweeping loose gravel from paths, and reporting any damage to the project leaders.
This author has volunteered his services before with a youth group to do similar work next to Tryfan in North Wales and I can confirm it is more fun than advertised! You will not be alone, working with 1-5 others on a section of path for up to a day. The work is mostly small, just sweeping and clearing paths, but is vital to keep people to paths and minimise erosion in Britain's wild places.
If you help run a youth group or just want an excuse to get up into the Fells for a weekend with a difference then consider volunteering via the below link.
